Shred your twigs and branches to make compost, mulch or even chippings.

In the garden, material from your shredder will help make better compost by providing a good mix of greens and browns in your compost bin.  Some people keep a supply of shredded woody waste next to their compost bin to mix in with grass cuttings when the lawn is mowed.

You can also use your shredded garden waste as mulch to conserve water and control those dreaded weeds.  First remove any weeds and then water the ground, before spreading the shreddings about 5cm deep.  Over time they will decay and worms will work them into the soil.

The shreddings can also be used for decorative purposes such as to enhance paths or to spread around flowers.

Shredding your garden waste will save you time by reducing visits to household recycling centres (and cleaning the car!). It also helps reduce the waste that local authorities handle.
