Make an Olympic effort to recycle in 2012
People across Herefordshire
and Worcestershire are being called upon to make an
Olympic effort in 2012.
Worcestershire County Council’s Waste Prevention Team
has linked with District Council's and Herefordshire
Council to promote the 'Are you a recycling gold medalist?'
campaign, which aims to encourage everyone to play their part in
going for gold and recycling more than ever before.
Over the coming months residents are asked to watch out for a
leaflet coming through their letterboxes entitled "Are you a
recycling gold medalist?" designed to remind residents in a fun
way, what to recycle and provides ideas for what to do with the
items that are much harder to recycle.
Christopher Atkinson, Worcestershire County Council Senior
Waste Prevention Officer, said: "Residents across
Worcestershire have recycled more than 50,000 tonnes through
kerbside collections in the last year, which is enough to fill more
than 100 Olympic size swimming pools, but there is more that can be
done, the leaflet offers residents the opportunity to test how good
they are at recycling and those who do everything right can award
themselves a gold medal."
Items which are suitable to be recycled include; food tins, drink
cans, aerosols and biscuit tins, waxed cartons, plastic bottles and
containers such as yoghurt pots and margarine tubs, paper and all
thicknesses of cardboard.
Councillor Anthony Blagg, Cabinet Member with
Responsibility for Environment and Waste Management said:
“We couldn’t resist giving our latest recycling campaign an Olympic
theme. London 2012 is all about leaving a positive lasting legacy
for future generations and likewise our ability to recycle as much
as we can now will result in a better environment for future
generations."
