Love your leftovers!
Residents of St Johns have been learning how to turn their
leftovers into simple, nutritious meals with the help of
Worcestershire County Council waste officers and students from the
University of Worcester.
Six residents recently attended the Love Food Hate Waste
community cookery classes to learn how to save money and cook
healthy meals using their leftovers. Quiches, lasagnes, trifles and
meringues were just some of the things on the menu.
Viktoria Salisbury, Worcestershire County Council Senior
Waste Prevention Officer, said: "8.3 million tonnes
of food is thrown away by households in the UK every year, costing
the average family £680 a year. The majority of this waste
was once perfectly good food and by learning new recipes and being
more creative, everyone can save money and make more of the food
that they buy.
"Many people lack the confidence or knowledge to know how to use up
leftovers or create nutritious and tasty meals from scratch, and we
know that this leads to food being wasted."
St Johns resident, Alan McGonigle, said: "I
enjoyed the cookery course immensely. The course gets you thinking
of creative ways to use food and gives you confidence in cooking as
well as some top tips."
