Keep your eyes peeled for an opportunity to save money
Worcestershire County Council, Worcester City
Council and students from the University of Worcester are
teaming
up to offer advice to residents to help them save money and make
the most of the food they buy.
The Love Food Hate Waste campaign, which will
be launched at the University's Refreshers Fair on February 1, will
be targeting the St John's, Dines Green and Lower Wick areas of the
city. Throughout February, March and April the team will be running
a series of events where they will offer local residents handy
tips, advice and recipes for leftovers to help reduce food
waste.
The average family throws away around £680
worth of perfectly good food in a year, which works out at over £50
per month, and any residents who would like to save some money by
making a few simple changes to the way they shop for, store and
cook food are encouraged to keep their eyes peeled for the
campaign.
Councillor Anthony Blagg,
Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet Member for Waste and
Sustainability, said: "We are pleased to be working
together with Worcester City Council and the University of
Worcester to deliver this community project around the St Johns
area.
"Staff will be out and about in the local
community over the next three months helping residents to reduce
food waste and save money. They will be able to offer lots of
helpful hints, tips and recipe ideas for using up leftovers.
"Reducing food waste can save households money
and it is a great way to help the environment, if everyone stopped
wasting food it would have the equivalent CO2 impact of taking 1 in
4 cars off the road."
