County residents behind new recycling scheme
Herefordshire Council’s new recycling scheme is being actively
used by 99 per cent of residents in the county, according to
respondents in the 20th Herefordshire Voice
survey.
Key findings from the survey were that 99 per cent recycled a lot
or everything that can be recycled while 98 per cent said recycling
was either fairly or very important to them personally.
It was also found that 89 per cent of respondents had produced less
black bag rubbish, 91 per cent said the service was either good or
very good and 80 per cent felt the new recycling service was better
than the previous one.
Councillor John Jarvis, Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet
Member for Environment and Strategic Housing,
said: “I am delighted that so many people have
embraced recycling and it is important to them.
“I am
also pleased with the huge reduction in black sack rubbish because
this is significantly reducing the amount of household waste we
send to landfill.
“Recently, a group of councillors visited Envirosort
at Norton where we take all of the recyclable materials to be
sorted and converted into useful products and they were very
impressed with the hi-tech facility.
“We have already
seen our recycling rates rise to 38 per cent of waste and are on
course to meet our target of 40 per cent by the end of the
year.
“I would like to thank all residents for supporting
the new scheme and helping us to meet and hopefully exceed these
challenging targets. If I could also remind residents to
ensure items for recycling are clean, loose and dry. People are
asked not to put plastic bags or films in with their recycling and
also keep any paper or card flat,” he added.
