Over one third of the contents of an average UK household bin can
be home composted, and garden waste can also be added to a compost
bin.
Household waste and garden waste can be combined in your compost
bin to make excellent compost. For example, grass cuttings can be
mixed with shredded confidential paper work, egg boxes and
scrunched up newspaper to produce fantastic results. Fruit and
vegetable peelings, coffee grounds, tea bags, egg shells and
shredded garden waste can all be added to the compost bin.
Christopher Atkinson, County Council Senior Waste
Prevention Officer, said: "By composting at home you
can prevent approximately one third of your waste going to landfill
and very little effort is required to make excellent compost.
"Homemade compost will produce great results in your garden, you
can use it to top up pots, feed trees and shrubs, or help grow
award winning flowers and vegetables. You can even feed your lawn.
By composting your garden waste at home you can also save yourself
a trip to the Household Recycling Centre too."
