Redditch residents asked to 'keep up the good work' as the 5,000^th tonne of waste is diverted from landfill sites this year thanks to EnviroSort

People in Redditch have been congratulated for their recycling efforts after the 5,000^th tonne of waste – equivalent to the weight of around twenty-five 747 jumbo jets – was collected for delivery to the Worcestershire County Council's EnviroSort facility.

Residents have risen to the challenge and taken advantage of this year's changes to their kerbside collection systems, managed by Redditch Borough Council, and are now being asked to keep up the good work.

Recyclables placed in household green bins since January have been transported to Worcestershire's state-of-the-art facility, EnviroSort, where the sophisticated technology employed allows materials to be sorted better than ever before.

The impressive site, which is operated by Severn Waste Services for Worcestershire County Council, covers 5.8 acres, has more than a mile of conveyer belts, 145 electric motors and 12 miles of cable. Once sorted the materials are then transferred to various outlets in Britain and across Europe where they are reprocessed and used again.

The 5,000^th tonne of kerbside recycling was delivered from Redditch to the facility, in Norton, near Worcester, last week.

Cllr Brandon Clayton, Redditch Borough Council's Portfolio Holder for Local Environment, said: "I'd like to say a big thank-you to everyone who has taken advantage of the new kerbside collection scheme to recycle this impressive amount. The people of Redditch should be congratulated for their efforts and, most importantly, I'd like to ask residents to keep up the good work.

Residents are being reminded they can place a host of materials into their green bin collections including:

• Food tins and drink cans;
• Mixed glass bottles and jars;
• Plastic bottles and containers;
• Paper
• Cartons and;
• Cardboard.

Cllr Anthony Blagg, Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet Member for Waste and Sustainability, who was recently named as one of the region's Top 50 Green Leaders by Sustainability West Midlands, said: "We can all play a part when it comes to reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill sites and it's great to see that happening in Redditch. EnviroSort has helped make things easier than ever before when it comes to recycling household waste and these impressive figures back that up."
