Bubble House Worms
During October 2010, local Master Composters visited Bubble
House Worms in Bransford near Worcester to find out more about how
worms can help us manage food waste.
Ken and Woody at Bubble House Worms make many
of their own unique wormeries for sale to the public, as well as
stocking the usual favourites such as the Worm Works
Wormery.
Bubble House Worms also breed their own worms
fed on ingredients such as food waste, shredded paper and
card. Worms are sold with wormeries to get started and also
to help rescue sorry wormeries. Local fishermen also call
by.
Interestingly there are four differing types
of native worms bred here. A mixture of Eisenia Fetida, Eisenia
Rubellus and Dendrobena Venata are supplied with wormeries, they
all have slightly different likes and dislikes so a combination
works best for gobbling up food waste. They also breed Lumbricus
Terrestris, deep burrowing worms for soil improvement. We
also learnt that worms will only mate with worms of the same type
length and thickness.
It is important to keep your worms happy in
the right environment, not too warm and not too cold in the
winter. They are also particularly fond of water melon and
horse manure!!!
"It is a real eye opener to realise how we
depend on such humble creatures as worms for the health and
fertility of our soil, and hence the food we eat. Following
this visit, I am even more protective of my worms - the chickens
& birds can have all the slugs they want, but keep off my
worms!" Maureen Martin, Master Composter.
"The world of worms and wormeries at Bubble
House Worms was fascinating and highly entertaining." Angie Hill,
Master Composter
